The
Alliance française (AF) is a non-profit organization
that works to promote understanding of French language and
culture around the world. With more than 100 branches in
the US and hundreds more in 137 countries around the world,
the Alliance française offers French classes at all levels
and sponsors many different events where everyone from beginners
to native speakers has the opportunity to meet for dinner,
movies, lectures, and other social and cultural activities.
Participating in these events is an excellent way to get
more practice speaking French and improve your skills.
The
Alliance française de Paris offers not only extensive
and intensive French language classes, but also teacher
training, translation courses, and various certificates
and diplomas related to French studies, including the DELF/DALF
French proficiency tests.
Although
under the umbrella of a single organization, each branch
of the Alliance française offers its own schedule of events,
so check with your local branch to find out what's available.
As with any organization, some branches are better than
others and not everyone has the same experience, but generally
speaking the Alliance française offers excellent French
classes with native-French teachers and a variety of cultural
events.
Some of the larger Alliance Française chapters are test
centers for the administration of language tests emanating
from France and recognized by French universities and other
agencies. These tests include:
